2016: The Year Blue Made a Comeback

As we say our initial goodbyes to 2016, it’s only appropriate that we take a look back at the best and most buzzed about beauty trends of the year. One of our top picks was a popular look both on the runway and IRL and took many different forms throughout the last 12 months. This unexpected beauty craze put bright blue makeup on the map once again (shout out to the ‘70s and ‘80s for holding it down!) but this time with a much more modern and high fashion personality.

From rich sapphires to bright pops of teal, celebrities and runway models were rocking the statement-making colour on their eyes and, every so often, even on their lips in a variety of shades. In an ode to the blue makeup looks that took over 2016, we’ve gathered up some of our favorite variations of makeup design and hair design for your viewing pleasure. Who knows, maybe this will even inspire your look for that upcoming holiday party!

Making a major splash at the Diane von Furstenberg New York Fashion Week SS/16 show, blue eyeshadow-clad models set the bar for the aquatic hued trend. This ultra retro rendition was accompanied by equally nostalgic voluminous brushed out curls and large flower accessories to complete the look. A few handfuls of other designers also had a similar vision for the upcoming year including Marc Jacobs, Chanel and Missoni. Although each look was unique in its own right, it was clear that blue was thee colour sure to make a big impact in 2016.

Soon to pick up on this trend was Lupita Nyong’o who has employed blue eye makeup as one of her signature looks for a while now. The bold shade of rich royal blue she regularly rocks on her eyelids compliments her skin tone beautifully, so when she showed off the same vibrant hue on her lips at the London premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the end of 2015, it was love at first sight.

Taking a more subtle approach to this vivid trend, Joan Smalls flaunted some blue rimmed eyes framed with fluttery lashes and a bright blue waterline. The totally matte look created by makeup artist Porsche Cooper is finished off with cherry red lips and perfectly contoured cheeks.

Olivia Munn also stunned in a smoky blue look crafted by makeup artist Patrick Ta. Her look kept the deep blue just along the lower lashline in a thick smoked out border. The full look was finished off with her signature glowing skin, rosy cheeks and brows groomed to perfection.

This last look is not for the faint of heart. Straying from your typical laws of beauty and totally committing an out of this world monochromatic look, Lucy Hale donned cobalt rimmed eyes and a deep metallic pout to match for a photoshoot this fall. Talk about "going for it."

With only a couple weeks left of 2016 the question is: Will this trend survive into 2017? We’ll be keeping an eye out!
